Mike calls from Lat 87°24.464'S Lon 81°47.757' W.
"It was a greaet day yesterday! I progressed 33kms!!! The weather has become more stable and temperatures have dropped conciderably. This makes the sled glide better and of course is great for the morale after all the struggling over the last few days!"
"The temps must be around -28°C so I need to protect my nose and of course my fingers."
"Unfortunately it seems that Borge and the two young explorers are stuck in Punta Arenas still. They will arrive in Antarctica as soon as the wind drops and the landing piste has been cleared. I will use the time I have now to advance as quickly as possible as my pace will most likely slow down when they arrive. My goal is to arrive at the Pole on the 16th of January so I must do an average of 28 kms a day!"

Mike hits the 87° latitude!
"The day started very well but deteriorated quickly from there on. The winds had turned and I saw the opportunity of taking out the kite. I imagined myself doing 100kms in one go so was very excited. Ha ha! I was mistaken because as soon as the kite was up un the air, a nasty wind gust came and tangled the kite cords. It took forever to untangle them! After fixing them I decided to use a smaller kite instead and as soon as it went up, low and behold, the wind died down and my opportuntity was over! I sadly packed the kites away again. I guess that is why kites in general are not used when heading to the pole. Only once you are leaving the pole does it become an option"
"To regain lost time I continued walking through the evening. I did 16kms and only stopped and got into my tent at 1h30am!"

Mike rings from Lat 86°58.4' S and Lon 82°15.93'W.
"Yesterday was a frustrating day" says Mike." I advanced 25kms in deep snow, lots of Sastrugi, and white-out conditions.
At one stage the wind changed so I thought I would get out my kite. I changed my boots, took the skins off my skis and then the wind changed again. I wasted time arranging my equipment when I could have been moving!!! 782 kms done and 338kms to go!!"
In the meantime, Borge Ousland along with our two young explorers Clémence and Nicolas, are supposed to fly into Patriots Hills today. It seems unlikely they will fly today due to white-out conditions. The next flight leaving Punta Arenas will probably be on the 6th!
3rd of January
"Yesterday I did 31kms! The wind calmed down a little and conditions were are lot better. The wind from the previous days had blown the loose snow away so the sled didn't sink in so much.
I'm now at an altitude of 2000m and have 800 meters to go. I'm slowly but surely skiing my way up this glacial ice cap.
It's 7h30 am so it's time to get moving. It'll be a good 13 hours before I get into my tent again. I hope it'll be a good day. 360kms to go until the pole!" Mike

Yesterday was better than the day before. "I managed to do 27kms but had to walk an extra 1 and a half hours to do so! It's still really tough going as I am battling through loads of accumulated snow.
I'm now at 86°30.S and in a few more days will be at 87°S. Only 395 kms to do until the Pole. Its getting closer!
I'm in the tent preparing my porridge for breakfast. At the same time I'm listening to my MP3 player. It's good to listen to music at times. It helps the time pass.
Let's see what the day will ring us today. I'm hoping to do 30kms but with these conditions I think I might be exaggerating some what!" Mike.

I hope today will be a great start to the year as yesterday, the last day of 2008, was certainly one of the worst days I have had on the ice!
What a crazy day! White-out conditions with strong gusts and the worse snow conditions ever! Pulling my sled felt like I was pulling it through wet concrete! I was exhausted by the end of the day and noticed that I only advanced 23 kms!
Today, the 1st of January 2009, already promises to be better. The weather seems to have cleared and the wind has died down.

Pangaea - A dream for Mike Horn that over the years has slowly developed to become a reality.
Many years ago Mike decided that when he was older he would like to travel the world and share its beauty with the younger generation... but to do this, he first of all needed the experience. He started to set challenges for himself - swimming the rivers, sailing the oceans, surviving alone in the different environments and in different weather extremes, affronting all elements of nature and continually pushed both his physical and mental limits. Mike Horn has accomplished all of the goals that he set out for himself a long time ago and now he feels ready to share his experiences with others.
Today, Mike Horn wants to leave a trace on society, not to become a name in the history books, but to be known to the world as somebody who has done something to create awareness in todays youth and who has made a small but noticeable mark towards helping the environment and the world in which we live in.
Mike Horn calls his dream the 'Pangaea Expedition'. Through the help of caring supporters Mike Horn has been able to build a boat - a boat which can take young adults around the world, a boat that will be used as an educative platform, as a tool to clean-up the planet and a boat that can be used to communicate young adults visions and their environmental projects to the rest of the world.

Mike atteint la latitude 87°!
'La journée avait bien commencé mais elle s'est rapidement déteriorée depuis. Le vent a tourné et j'ai entrevu la possibilité de sortir mon kite. Je m'imaginais déjà parocurir une centaine de km en une fois, j'étais très excité. Ha, ha! Quelle erreur, a peine le kite était en l'air qu'un méchant coup de vent a emmêlé les cordes du kite. Il m'a fallu une éternité pour démêler tout ça! Une fois terminé, j'ai décidé d'utiliser un plus petit kite et dès qu'il est monté dans les airs, le vent est tombé et l'occasion était passée! Malheureusement j'ai remballé mes kites. Je commence à comprendre pourquoi les kites en général ne sont pas utilisés pour aller en direction du Pôle. Ce n'est que sur le retour que ça devient un bonne option.
Pour ratrapper le temps perdu j'ai continueé de marcher dans la soirée. J'ai fait 16km et je ne me suis arrêté pour monter ma tente qu'à 1h30 du matin!

Mike a appelé depuis Lat. 86°58.4'S et Long. 82°15.93'O.
'J'ai passé une journée frustrante hier' dit Mike. 'Je n'ai fait que 25km dans de la haute neige, beaucoup de sastrugis et le jour blanc.
A un moment le vent a changé et j'ai cru pouvoir utiliser mon kite. J'ai changé mes chaussures, enlever les peaux de mes skis et le vent à rechanger. J'ai perdu du temps à ranger mon matériel alors que j'aurais pu avancer!!! 782km parcourus, encore 338km à faire!!'¨
Peandant ce temps, Borge Ousland accompagné de nos deux jeunes explorateurs Clémence et Nicolas, devraient s'envoler pour Patriot Hills aujourd'hui. Ce qui semble peu probable à cause du jour blanc. Le prochain vol quittant Punta Arenas est prévu pour le 6!

'Hier j'ai fait 31km! Le vent est tombé un peu et les conditons étaient bien meilleures. Le vent des jours précédents avait soufflé la couche supérieure de neige, donc la luge ne s'enfonçait plus autant.
Je suis maintenant à 2000m d'altitude et je dois encore monter de 800m. Lentement mais surement je gravis cette calotte galcière.
Il est 7h30 du matin, c'est l'heure de se préparer. Dans 13 bonnes heures je serai à nouveau dans ma tente. J'espère que ce sera une bonne journée. plus que 360km jusqu'au Pôle!'

C'était mieux hier que la veille. 'J'ai pu faire 27km mais pour y arriver, j'ai dû marcher 1h30 de plus! C'est toujours très difficile d'avancer parce que je dois continuellement me battre dans la neige qui s'accumule.
Je suis maintenant à 86°30 S, dans quelques jours je serai à 87°S. Plus que 395km jusqu'au Pôle. ça se rapproche!
Je suis en train de préparer mon porridge du matin dans ma tente. En même temps, j'écoute de la musique sur mon MP3. ça fait du bien d'écouter un peu de musique parfois, ça fait passer le temps.
On verra ce que la journée d'aujourd'hui me réserve. J'espère faire 30km mais avec ces conditions je pense être un peu optimiste!'

'J'espère que l'année a bien commencé pour vous, parce que hier, le dernier jour de 2008, était certainement une des pires journées que j'aie vécu sur la glace!
Quelle journée de fous! Jour blanc avec de grosses rafales de vent et les pires conditions de neige jamais vues! Je tirais ma luge comme si je devais la tirer dans du béton frais! J'étais exténué à la fin de la journée et pourtant je n'ai fait que 23km!
Aujourd'hui, 1er janvier 2009, promet déjà d'être meilleur. Le ciel s'est éclairci et le vent est tombé.

Le moment est maintenant venu de vous dévoiler la nouvelle expédition de Mike Horn : Pangaea. Mike Horn en rêvait depuis longtemps ! Un rêve qui tout au long des années, lentement mais sûrement, est devenu réalité.

Mike Horn a maintenant atteint tous les buts qu’il s’était fixés et se sent prêt à partager ses expériences avec les autres.
Aujourd’hui, Mike Horn veut laisser une trace de son passage dans notre société. Non pas en ayant son nom dans les livres d’histoire, mais en étant reconnu comme quelqu’un qui a provoqué une prise de conscience chez les jeunes d’aujourd’hui. Il veut laisser une trace, petite mais non non-négligeable, en agissant pour la protection de l’environnement et le monde dans lequel nous vivons.
Mike Horn a baptisé son rêve "Pangaea". Grâce à l’aide importante de personnes qui le soutiennent, Mike Horn a pu construire un bateau qui emmènera des adolescents autour du monde, qui sera une plateforme éducative, un outil pour nettoyer la planète, un bateau qui permettra aux jeunes de transmettre au reste du monde leur vision de la planète et de présenter leurs projets environnementaux.
La philosophie de Mike Horn
Aujourd’hui le monde se bat pour trouver une solution aux problèmes environnementaux actuels, au réchauffement climatique et pour mettre en place des solutions durables.
La Terre et ses éléments sont le terrain de jeu de Mike Horn, sa raison de vivre, sa passion. Lui aussi aimerait trouver une solution à ce problème mondial.
« Prendre soin des sources de vie dont nous profitons devrait être une priorité pour chacun de nous. Le problème aujourd’hui est que nous perdons le contact avec la nature, en oubliant sa beauté, et nous perdons ainsi espoir. "Gestern habe ich 31 Km geschafft! Der Wind hatte stark abgeflacht wodurch die Bedingungen um einiges besser waren. Die Winde von gestern haben den Neuschnee etwas weggeblasen weswegen mein Schlitten nicht mehr so tief im Schnee versank.
Ich befinde mich nun 2000 M.ü.M. und es fehlen mir noch 800 Höhenmeter. Langsam aber sicher werde ich auf diesem riesigen Eisberg oben ankommen.
Es ist 7 Uhr 30 in der Frühe und ich muss nun los. Dreizehn Stunden stehen mir bevor bis ich wieder in mein Zelt kriechen kann. Hoffen wir, dass es ein guter Tag sein wird. Noch 360 Km bis zum Pol!" Mike

Gestern war wieder einmal ein guter Tag. "Ich habe 27 Km geschafft, musste aber anderthalb Stunden länger laufen! Es ist nach wie vor sehr hart weil mich durch verwehten Schnee kämpfen muss.
Ich bin jetzt bei 86°30 Süd angelangt und in ein paar Tagen werde ich bei 87° Süd sein. Dann verbleiben mir noch 395 Km bis zum Pol. Er rückt näher!
Ich befinde mich gerade im Zelt und bereite mir meinen Haferbrei zum Frühstück vor. Gleichzeitig höre ich Musik von meinem MP3-Player. Es tut richtig gut manchmal Musik zu hören und die Zeit geht dadurch etwas schneller vorüber.
Wir werden sehen was mir der heutige Tag bringt. Ich hoffe 30 Km voranzukommen, aber unter solchen Bedingungen bin ich vielleicht etwas zu optimistisch!" Mike.

Ich hoffe, dass heute das neue Jahr mit einem guten Tag anfängt, auch deswegen weil der letzte Tag des vergangenen Jahres wohl einer meiner schlimmsten auf dem Eis war!
Es war ein verrückter Tag! Starkes Schneetreiben und starke Windböen gepaart mit den schlechtesten Schneeverhältnissen! Ich hatte das Gefühl ich ziehe meinen Schlitten durch frischen Zement! Am Ende des Tages war ich sehr erschöpft und hatte nur 23 Kilometer geschafft.
Heute, am ersten Januar 2009, scheint es bereits etwas besser zu sein. Das Wetter ist klarer und die Winde sind vollständig abgeflacht.
Ich wünsche allen einen schönen Tag und nur das Beste für 2009! Mike

Wir sind nun bereit die neue Expedition Mike Horns bekannt zu geben. Pangaea, seit geraumer Zeit Mike Horns Traum! Ein Traum welcher über die Jahre hinweg langsam aber sicher eine Realität geworden ist.
Vor vielen Jahre hatte Mike beschlossen, wenn er älter sei, werde er zusammen mit der jüngeren Generation die Welt bereisen, da er ihre Schönheit teilen möchte... Um dies jedoch zu verwirklichen, benötigte er zuerst die nötige Erfahrung.
Mike Horn begann sich selbst Herausforderungen zu stellen –in Flüssen schwimmend, segelnd auf den Ozeanen, in unterschiedlichsten und extremen Gebieten und Wetterzonen überlebend, allen Elementen der Erde ausgesetzt und immer nahe an der physischen und mentalen Grenze. Mike Horn hat alle seine vorgenommenen Ziele erreicht und fühlt sich nun bereit seine Erfahrung mit anderen zu teilen.
Heute will Mike Horn seine Spur in der Gesellschaft hinterlassen, nicht um einen Eintrag in die Geschichtsbücher zu erhalten, sondern um bekannt zu werden als jemand der etwas zur Wahrnehmung in der heutigen Jugend und ein kleines aber bemerkenswertes Zeichen in der Hilfe zugunsten der Umwelt beigetragen hat.

Unter gütiger Mithilfe fürsorglicher Unterstützer war Mike Horn in der Lage ein Boot zu bauen – ein Boot um Jugendliche um die Welt zu fahren, ein Boot welches als erzieherische Plattform dienen soll, als Hilfsmittel zu Sanierungsprojekten der Erde und ein Boot welches benutzt werden kann um die Sicht der Jugendlichen und ihre Umweltanliegen dem Rest der Welt zu mitzuteilen.
