HAMBURG, June 22, 2008 – Pangaea, one of the most remarkable voyages of exploration ever undertaken – a four-year trans-navigation of the globe by sea and land by South African adventurer-explorer Mike Horn - has arrived in Hamburg.
The expedition, named Pangaea after the supercontinent that existed 250 million years ago, will cover 100,000 kilometres, reaching the North and South Poles and crossing all the continents and oceans.
Mike Horn’s vessel ‘Pangaea’, a 35-metre environmentally-friendly ocean-going yacht, is in Hamburg as part of a global Road Show which will introduce the expedition to the world. Pangaea will stay in the historic German Hanseatic city for three days, until it sails on to London on June 23.
Mike Horn’s mission is to unite the continents again, through the Young Explorers Programme, with a powerful environmental message, to share his knowledge and to initiate environmental solutions for future generations.
Mike said: “I am delighted to be in Hamburg to introduce the Pangaea Expedition to the people of Germany. I will explain how I want to share my experience with future generations, providing the stimulation for them to find solutions and ultimately a sustainable balance between nature and mankind. This is the most exciting venture I have undertaken.
“It is a treasure hunt to uncover the solutions I know are there. By working together with, ingenuity, drive and resourcefulness, the energies of our individual efforts can complement each other and create a collective momentum to inspire change. Together we can tap the world’s most powerful energy source – the younger generation,” he added.
Mike Horn, arguably the world’s greatest modern-day explorer in all terrains, conditions and climates has undertaken exceptional feats of endurance, determination and courage which have extended the boundaries of human achievement. Among his exploits have been Latitude Zero, an 18-month circumnavigation of the Earth around the Equator, the Arktos Expedition, a solo circumnavigation of the Arctic Circle lasting 27 months, the North Pole Winter Expedition, the first ever night expedition to the North Pole, starting from the northern most point of Russia and ending two months later at the North Pole, the Himalaya Expedition, the ascent of two summits greater than 8’000meters without the use of additional oxygen, Gasherbrum I (8068m) et Gasherbrum II (8035m). Two other expeditions were done with his family, one crossing on ski the Northern Canadian Bylot Island, and the other skiing to the North Pole from the Russian Base of Barneo in temperatures of around -30°C.
After 15 years of exploration, Mike Horn, in partnership with his sponsors, has committed to share the wealth of knowledge and experience he has acquired from past expeditions on a new Pan Global Adventure for Environmental Action. The aim of the Pangaea Expedition is to cultivate respect for the environment and the protection of its resources for the sake of future generations.
At the heart of the expedition is ‘Pangaea’, a 35-metre yacht, which has been purpose-built to incorporate numerous state-of-the-art sustainable technologies. These are currently being developed and will include hydrogen fuel cell technology, solar panels, recyclable materials and numerous other features. Pangaea’s unique eco-friendly design and construction embodies the central philosophy of Mike Horn’s previous expeditions, all of which were undertaken using natural resources and human power.
Pangaea has been designed to navigate all oceans and conditions from the arctic to the tropics. It is also equipped with cutting-edge communication and conferencing facilities to broadcast progress from the most remote corners of the planet. Pangaea will serve as a unique mobile platform to support environmental research and educational projects at its various ports of call around the world.
At various stages throughout his journey, employing the Young Explorers Programme, young adults from each continent, aged 13 to 20 will be invited to join Mike on this amazing odyssey. Horn will walk, kayak, cycle, paraglide, ski and sail across all terrains including oceans, rivers, lakes, mountains, desert, jungle, tundra and ice fields. During each leg of the expedition educational specialists will join the young adults, sharing their knowledge about fauna and flora and helping them to understand the fragile and important interaction between man, nature and the elements. They will also invite participation to lobby youth support globally and provide a forum to help find sustainable solutions for a world in peril.
An additional objective will be the establishment of youth and environmental projects in selected regions that Pangaea visits. There will be a focus on:
Water Projects – emphasising the need to study and monitor the oceans, their bio-diversity and the impact humans have on them. The projects will also engage in ocean clean-ups, debris removal and the cleaning of coastlines and water sources
Biodiversity Projects – studying, understanding and appreciating flora and fauna, and the importance of a balanced ecosystem, with roadmaps as to how to achieve these
Social Community Projects – aiding and educating local communities on optimizing water supplies in villages, improving sanitary and hygiene conditions and becoming self-sustainable from an environmental perspective

The Pangaea Expedition was launched in Monaco on May 17 in the presence of HSH Prince Albert of Monaco and Mrs Gaynor Rupert, wife of Mr Johann Rupert, Executive Chairman of Richemont SA , who has agreed to be the ‘Godmother’ of Pangaea.

Following the stopover in Hamburg, Pangaea begins a series of visits that will take the vessel to Greenland, London and ending in New York at the beginning of September.
The Pangaea Expedition proper begins on October 9 when Mike Horn sets sail from Punta Arenas in Chile on the first stage of his epic journey to Antarctica, where he will trek to the South Pole. Then his route will take him through Australasia, China, Russia, to the North Pole, then across Greenland, North and South America and back to Punta Arenas.

HAMBOURG, 22 juin 2008 - Pangaea, le bateau d'une des plus incroyables expéditions jamais entreprises est arrivé à Hambourg: un voyage de quatre ans autour de la Terre par mer et par voie terrestre avec l'explorateur et aventurier sud-africain Mike Horn.
L'expédition, baptisée d'après le nom du continent unique qui existait il y a 250 millions d'années, parcourra 100000 km, pour atteindre le Pôle Nord et le Pôle sud en parcourant tous les océans et les continents.
Le bateau de Mike Horn, le Pangaea, un voilier écologique de 35 mètres est à Hambourg dans le cadre de son road-show mondial permettant de présenter l'expédition au monde entier. Le Pangaea restera dans la ville historique allemande de Hambourg durant trois jours, avant de mettre les voiles pour Londres le 23 juin.
La mission de Mike Horn est de réunifier les continents au travers d'un programme ‘Jeunes Explorateurs', avec un message écologique fort, afin de partager ses connaissances et trouver des solutions écologiques pour les générations futures.

Mike Horn, sans doute le plus grand explorateur des temps modernes, quel que soit le terrain, les conditions et le climat, a réalisé des prouesses faisant preuve d'une endurance, d'une détermination et d'un courage dépassant les limites du corps humain. Ses exploits incluent Latitude Zéro, le tour du monde le long de l'équateur en 18 mois, l'Expédition Arktos, la circumnavigation en solitaire du cercle polaire arctique en 27 mois, et l'Expédition Hivernale au pôle Nord, la première expédition polaire de nuit, du point le plus septentrional de la Russie pour arriver, deux mois plus tard, au pôle Nord. L'Himalaya avec deux sommets de plus de 8000 mètres sans oxygène, le Gasherbrun I (8068m) et le Gasherbrun II (8035m). Deux autres expéditions ont été réalisées en famille : la traversée de l'Ile de Bylot à l'extrême nord du Canada et le Pole Nord à ski depuis la base russe de Barnéo par des températures de -30°C.

Au cœur de l'expédition se trouve « Pangaea », un yacht de 35 mètres, construit spécialement afin d'y intégrer de nombreuses technologies durables de pointe. Pangaea est conçu pour naviguer sur n'importe quel océan, quelles que soient les conditions, de l'Arctique aux tropiques. À plusieurs stades de l'expédition, des jeunes de chaque continent, âgés de 13 à 20 ans, seront invités à rejoindre Mike dans le cadre du Projet Jeunes Explorateurs, et à participer à cette incroyable odyssée. À pied, en kayak, à bicyclette, en parapente, à ski et en voilier, Horn traversera toutes sortes de milieux, y compris des océans, des rivières, des lacs, des montagnes, des déserts, la jungle, la toundra, et des champs de glace. À chaque étape de l'expédition, des pédagogues viendront se joindre aux jeunes participants pour leur faire partager leur connaissance de la faune et la flore, et les aider à comprendre l'interaction importante mais fragile qui existe entre l'Homme, la nature et les éléments. Ils les inviteront également à solliciter le soutien des jeunes du monde entier et fourniront un forum destiné à faciliter la découverte de solutions durables pour un monde en péril.
Un autre objectif sera d'établir des projets environnementaux destinés aux jeunes dans certaines régions se trouvant sur le chemin de Pangaea. Ces projets seront axés sur les thèmes suivants :
* Projets Eau : soulignant l'importance de l'étude et de la surveillance des océans, de leur biodiversité et de l'impact de l'activité humaine sur eux. Les projets se concentreront également sur le « nettoyage » des océans, l'élimination des déchets et le nettoyage des côtes et des sources d'eau.
* Projets Biodiversité : pour étudier, comprendre et apprécier la flore et la faune, l'importance d'un écosystème équilibré, avec des feuilles de route pour y parvenir.
* Projets communautaires et sociaux : aider et éduquer les habitants d'un lieu afin qu'ils optimisent les ressources en eau d'un village, améliorent les conditions sanitaires et d'hygiène, et créent des conditions durables sur le plan environnemental.

Après son escale à Hambourg, Pangaea continuera sa tournée en passant par Londres, le Groenland et New York où il devrait arriver fin septembre.
L'Expedition PANGAEA proprement dite démarrera le 9 octobre lorsque Mike Horn mettra les voiles de Punta Arenas au Chili pour sa première étape l'emmenant en Antarctique. De là, Mike Horn partira à pied en direction du Pôle Sud. L'expédition l'emmènera en Australasie, en Chine, en Russie au Pôle Nord, à travers le Groenland, en Amérique du Nord et du Sud pour retourner à Punta Arenas.

HAMBURG, 22. Juni 2008 – Das Schiff Pangaea, auf dem der südafrikanische Abenteurer und Forscher Mike Horn eine der außergewöhnlichsten Forschungsfahrten aller Zeiten – eine vierjährige Überquerung und Umrundung der Erde zu Wasser und zu Lande – in Angriff nimmt, ist in Hamburg eingetroffen.
Auf seiner Expedition, die nach dem vor 250 Millionen Jahren existierenden Superkontinent Pangaea benannt ist, wird Mike Horn 100.000 Kilometer zurücklegen und dabei sowohl zum Nordpol als auch zum Südpol reisen und alle Erdteile und Weltmeere überqueren.
Mike Horns Expeditionsschiff Pangaea, eine 35 Meter lange, umweltfreundliche und seetaugliche Jacht, ist im Rahmen einer globalen Roadshow, bei der die Expedition auf der ganzen Welt vorgestellt wird, in Hamburg eingetroffen. Die Pangaea wird drei Tage lang in der geschichtsträchtigen Hansestadt verweilen, bevor sie am 25. Juni die Segel in Richtung London setzt.
Mike Horns Mission ist es, die Kontinente über das Programm „Young Explorers“ für junge Naturforscher mit einer starken Botschaft für den Umweltschutz wieder zu vereinen, sein Wissen weiterzugeben und Umweltprojekte für zukünftige Generationen ins Leben zu rufen.
Mike Horn dazu: „Ich freue mich, in Hamburg zu sein und die Pangaea-Expedition der deutschen Bevölkerung präsentieren zu können. Ich werde erklären, wie ich meinen Erfahrungsschatz mit zukünftigen Generationen teilen und junge Leute dazu inspirieren werde, nach Lösungen zu suchen, um letztendlich ein dauerhaftes Gleichgewicht zwischen der Natur und dem Menschen zu schaffen. Das ist das aufregendste Abenteuer, das ich je unternommen habe.“
„Die Suche nach den Lösungen, von denen ich weiß, dass sie existieren, ist wie eine Schatzsuche. Indem wir zusammenarbeiten und dabei unseren Scharfsinn, unsere Motivation und unseren Einfallsreichtum einsetzen, ergänzen sich die Leistungen jedes einzelnen und schaffen so einen kollektiven Impuls, um Änderungen zu bewirken. Gemeinsam können wir die stärkste Energiequelle der Welt anzapfen – die jüngere Generation“, fügt er hinzu.
Mike Horn, zweifellos einer der größten Forscher der Gegenwart, hat seine Ausdauer, seine Willensstärke und seinen Mut bereits auf zahlreichen außergewöhnlichen Expeditionen in jedem Winkel der Erde unter Beweis gestellt, bei denen er den widrigsten Umgebungs- und Wetterbedingungen trotzte und bis an die Grenzen des menschlich Möglichen ging. Zu seinen Rekordleistungen zählen unter anderem Breitengrad Null, eine 18-monatige Umrundung der Erde am Äquator, die Arktos-Expedition, bei der er in 27 Monaten alleine den Polarkreis umrundete, und die Winterexpedition zum Nordpol. Ausgehend vom nördlichsten Punkt Russlands durchquerte er dabei in der ständigen Dunkelheit der Polarnacht die Arktis und kam zwei Monate später am Nordpol an. Dazu kommen noch die Himalaya-Expedition, bei der er ohne zusätzlichen Sauerstoff zwei Achttausender bezwang – den Gasherbrum I (8068 m) und den Gasherbrum II (8035 m) – sowie zwei Expeditionen, die er gemeinsam mit seiner Familie in Angriff nahm – eine Überquerung der nordkanadischen Bylot-Insel auf Skiern sowie ein von der russischen Basis Barneo ausgehender Skilauf zum Nordpol bei Temperaturen von rund -30 °C.
Nachdem er die vergangenen 15 Jahre mit Forschungstätigkeiten verbracht hatte, entschloss sich Mike Horn nun im Rahmen des von seinen Sponsoren unterstützten weltumspannenden Abenteuers für aktiven Umweltschutz, das Wissen und die Erfahrungen, die er auf seinen Expeditionen gesammelt hat, an andere weiterzugeben. Ziel der Pangaea-Expedition ist es, den Respekt vor der Umwelt und den Schutz unserer natürlichen Ressourcen künftiger Generationen zuliebe zu steigern.
Das Herz der Mission bildet die Pangaea, eine 35 Meter lange Jacht, die eigens für die Expedition gebaut wurde und mit einer Vielzahl an hochmodernen, nachhaltigen Technologien ausgestattet ist. Dazu zählen unter anderem Wasserstoff-Brennstoffzellen, Solarkollektoren, wieder verwertbare Materialien sowie zahlreiche weitere Einrichtungen. Das einzigartige Design und die umweltfreundliche Konstruktion der Pangaea setzen die zentrale Philosophie von Mike Horns früheren Expeditionen fort, auf denen er sich immer natürliche Ressourcen und menschliche Kraft zunutze machte.
Die Pangaea wurde so gebaut, dass sie sich in allen Weltmeeren und unter allen Bedingungen – ob arktisch oder tropisch – navigieren lässt. Darüber hinaus ist sie mit den modernsten Kommunikationsmitteln und Konferenzsystemen ausgestattet, sodass ihre Passagiere sogar aus den entlegensten Winkeln der Erde über ihre Fortschritte berichten können. Die Pangaea wird an den verschiedenen Häfen, die sie auf der ganzen Welt anlaufen wird, als einzigartige mobile Plattform zur Unterstützung von Umweltforschungs- und Bildungsprojekten dienen.
Während verschiedener Phasen der Expedition werden im Rahmen des Young-Explorers-Programms auf jedem Kontinent Jugendliche im Alter von 13 bis 20 Jahren eingeladen, Mike Horn auf dieser fantastischen Reise zu begleiten. Horn wird sich zu Fuß, im Kajak, auf dem Fahrrad, mit einem Gleitschirm, auf Skiern und in einem Segelboot durch sämtliche Terrains – Meere, Flüsse, Seen, Gebirge, Wüsten, Dschungel, Tundren und Eisfelder – bewegen. Auf jedem Abschnitt der Expedition gesellen sich Bildungsexperten zu den Jugendlichen, die ihr Wissen über Flora und Fauna an sie weitergeben und ihr Verständnis für das zerbrechliche, aber wichtige Zusammenspiel von Mensch, Natur und den Naturgewalten fördern werden. Sie werden die Jugendlichen außerdem weltweit zur Teilnahme und Unterstützung auffordern und ihnen eine Diskussionsplattform bieten, damit sie nachhaltige Lösungen für unseren gefährdeten Planeten finden können.
Ein weiteres Ziel der Expedition liegt in der Schaffung von Jugend- und Umweltschutzprojekten in ausgewählten Regionen, denen die Pangaea einen Besuch abstattet. Die Schwerpunkte liegen dabei in folgenden Bereichen:
Wasser: Diese Projekte sollen die Notwendigkeit betonen, die Ozeane, ihren Artenreichtum und den Einfluss der Menschen zu erforschen und zu beobachten. Aktivitäten im Rahmen dieser Projekte umfassen unter anderem Meeres-Reinigungsaktionen, die Entfernung von Ablagerungen und die Säuberung von Küsten- und Quellgebieten.
Biodiversität: Diese Projekte dienen dazu, Flora und Fauna zu erforschen, besser zu verstehen und schätzen zu lernen. Die Bedeutung eines ausgeglichenen Ökosystems – und Pläne, wie man ein solches erreichen kann – soll betont werden.
Gesellschaft: Diese Projekte sollen lokale Gemeinden aufklären und ihnen dabei helfen, die Wasservorräte in ihren Dörfern besser zu nutzen, die gesundheitlichen und hygienischen Bedingungen zu verbessern und aus ökologischer Sicht unabhängig zu werden.
Um diese Ziele zu erreichen, sind die Pangaea-Initiatoren eine Partnerschaft mit führenden Innovatoren aus den verschiedensten Sparten eingegangen. Als Partner und Hauptsponsor erbringt Mercedes-Benz einen weiteren Beweis für seinen Einsatz für die Nachhaltigkeit. Mit seinen hochmodernen Technologien ermöglicht das Unternehmen die Durchführung von Mike Horns sozialen und ökologischen Projekten. „Mike Horn und Mercedes-Benz sind Pioniere in ihrem Fach. Als Präsentationspartner des Pangaea-Projektes fungiert Officine Panerai, ein langjähriger Förderer von Mike Horn. Die Schweizer Geberit AG ist als neuer Präsentationspartner zu Mike Horns Vorhaben hinzugestoßen und stolz darauf, Teil dieses großartigen Abenteuers sein zu dürfen. Die Geberit AG wird sich an diesem Projekt mit speziellen Initiativen beteiligen und versuchen, das tägliche Leben vieler, denen der Zugang zu sauberem Wasser und guten Sanitäreinrichtungen bisher verwehrt geblieben ist, zu verändern und zu verbessern.
Der Startschuss für die Pangaea-Epedition fiel am 17. Mai in Monaco in Gegenwart von Fürst Albert von Monaco sowie Gaynor Rupert, der Gattin von Johann Rupert, dem Verwaltungsratspräsidenten von Richemont SA, die ihre Rolle als Taufpatin der Pangaea wahrnahm.
Mike Horn sagte: „Ich möchte unseren Sponsoren und unseren Partnern für ihre Unterstützung danken. Sie haben es uns ermöglicht, unsere Vision mit anderen zu teilen und unsere Mission zu erfüllen. Dies wird eine Reise, die wir zusammen unternehmen und die nur angetrieben wird von gegenseitiger Begeisterung und gemeinsamen Zielen. Es wird sicherlich eine Reise, die echte Fortschritte bewirken wird, damit unserer Planet von den zukünftigen Generationen respektiert und geschätzt werden kann.“
Nach ihrem Aufenthalt in Hamburg steht für die Pangaea eine Reihe von Besuchen auf dem Programm, die das Schiff nach London, Grönland und letztendlich nach New York führen werden, wo es Ende September einlaufen soll.
Die eigentliche Pangaea-Expe-dition beginnt am 9. Oktober, wenn Mike Horn in Punta Arenas in Chile die Segel setzen wird. Der erste Abschnitt seiner langen und abenteuerlichen Reise führt ihn in die Antarktis, wo Horn bis zum Südpol marschieren wird. Anschließend führt ihn sein Weg über Australien und Ozeanien, China und Russland zum Nordpol, bevor er über Grönland, Nord- und Südamerika nach Punta Arenas zurückkehrt.
